KOJAK, part 1. by vykonavatel77
How did it all start? My name is Michael. I was born in 1961 and I had a really nice childhood. At that time, it was fashionable for boys to have long hair, at least covering their ears, a shirt collar and bangs as long as possible. My parents were understanding of such hair and that's why I only went to a unisex barbershop for a short haircut from a young age like most boys. But there were also many whose parents demanded short boys' haircuts in old-fashioned barbershops, usually with only one barber chair.
When I was 13, I started to notice boys with short hair more. I really liked their fresh haircuts. One of them was my very good friend Thomas, who always went to the old-fashioned barbershop with his brother Jay, who was 6 years younger, and his father. When Thomas came to school with a haircut, I didn't know I could look away from his head and I wanted to touch his shaved nape or stubble.
We were both 14 years old at the beginning of the summer of 1975. I was at Thomas's playing when his father came and said Thomas and Joy are going to the barbershop in 10 minutes. Thomas was trying to avoid another haircut, so he told his father Michael is here to play with. We can go to the barbershop tomorrow. To which his father replied Michael can come to us again when we get back from the barbershop.
On the way home I was very excited, not only to see both boys get their haircuts but also because their father would not allow me to postpone their haircuts. I realized that when my parents tell me to go get my hair cut a little shorter, it takes me 2 to 3 weeks to visit the Unisex barbershop.
After more than an hour I rang the doorbell. He opened the door for me Thomas got a haircut. We started talking about visiting the old-fashioned Hobson's barbershop, where Thomas regularly went for short haircuts. I asked not only how the barbershop was set up but also what it was like, how it felt when the barber cut him and gave him a short haircut. I was very excited at the thought of sitting in the barber's chair. Later I confessed that if I got up the courage, I would try it during the holidays, but not so short haircut at Hobson's barbershop.
Later I looked for Hobson's barbershop and started watching if any boys came in and then when they came out of the barbershop with a haircut. The boys' haircuts were short but I was very excited.
After the school year ended, Thomas told me to come to his place at 2 pm, that we would go into town for dessert, as a reward for your schoolwork all year. I forgot what I had said about my haircut during holidays.
Thomas and I were walking into town, talking, and I didn't realize when we stopped in front of Hobson's barbershop. Thomas laughed and said now you're going to get a haircut. I was shocked. I was looking for excuses, but Thomas wouldn't let himself be beaten and pushed me into the barbershop. There were several boys there today with their parents. We sat on the waiting chairs and I started to look inside the barbershop. I had never been to such an old barbershop. I looked in amazement at the backs of the boys getting their haircuts. The excitement was building. Another one came. Then Thomas pulled my hand and told me to sit in the barbershop chair.
I sat in the chair. Every muscle in my body felt tense. The barber tied a sheet tightly around my neck. He started to rake my hair. He had to be careful to pull my long hair out from under my neck sheets. My mind raced ...
The barber said I don't do those long hair styles like a boy will do today? Thomas came to the barber's chair and said Kojak. I don't know the names of short hairstyles and I didn't even know the series about Inspector Kojak. The barber asked me if I agreed with that. I shrugged and said quietly Yes.
I was scared. The barber tilted my head back. He placed heavy electric hair clippers on my forehead and ran them over the top of my head several times. Later he tilted my head back and cut the hair from the side of my head, then from the other side of my head. Finally he cut the hair at the back of my head.
When the barber turned off the hair clippers and I saw myself in the mirror, my throat went dry. I had only very short stubble on my entire head.
Completely ruined. My eyes watered as I stared at the mountain of silky hair in my lap. It was all gone and it hurt so much. I was angry with Thomas. I saw him smiling in the mirror on the waiting chair. Mr. Hobson brushed my cropped hair off the sheet, wet my entire head and applied white lather to it. He had a leather belt hanging from the side of the chair on which he sharpened his razor and gradually and carefully scraped the lather off my head. When he had finished shaving his head he wiped the remains of the lather on a towel and applied a foul-smelling liquid to my head, which he massaged into the skin. The head was white and shiny. When he freed me from the sheet and I jumped out of his chair, I paid him for today's scalping. I looked over at the waiting chair to scold Thomas for tricking me. Then behind me I hear his voice saying to the barber. To Kojak.
Before Thomas left the barber's chair, his father entered the barbershop with his younger brother Joy. My father checked my haircut first, then Thomas. His brother Joy knew that soon his head would also be completely bald and hairless. He was only 8 years old, but he did not agree with such a haircut.
On the way home, I stroked my head and looked for hair. Thomas said that his father had ordered a complete shave for him and his brother, and if I had known this in advance, I would never have gone to Hobson's Barbershop.
At home, my parents were shocked at first by my new short, voluntary haircut, but my father said When we were children, most boys had their hair cut like this in the summer.
After a few days, the first stubble appeared on my head, which I teased with my palms. It was very exciting.
It was worse when I met classmates or cousins.
