I too started my transition to short hair at the same time, same age, just in a different college in a different state.
Once I braved the haircut that exposed my ears after hiding them for many years, I knew my short hair journey had just begun. No longer was I afraid to get short back and sides. In fact, the shorter the better! Never blocked, tapered ðŸ'¯. I always said that once the hair came off my ears, I would eventually resort to shaving all of my hair off. It took many years and some strong nudges from father nature.
Back in that time period, hair like described here was almost exclusively on ROTC. I wasn’t ROTC but got compliments from those guys.
I’m jealous of young guys now who skip the in between haircuts and go straight to a shaved head. I was definitely on the very first wave of shaved heads in the late 90’s.

Two young bald transformation by classic cutz That was a nice story although I thought the father should have had his head shaved just like his sons. It was great that the younger boy was eager to have his head shaved by the barber, but I understood the initial trepidation of his teenage brother. I never had my head shaved bald as a teenager, but I did have to have my hair cut into a buzz cut after I had brain surgery.
