A Serious Haircut by Sean Barnet Thank you, everyone, for all your comments. Yes, there is indeed a cultural difference between Britain and America, "Sir" is much more widely used in America. It used to be the same here in Britain, but it has fallen out of use here except when convention absolutely demands it, eg the Army. We find it too intense. Same thing with names, When an American uses someone's name while talking to them, we understand that they are trying to be friendly, but it still makes us wince - it feels like an invasion of our personal space. I like to use the idea of no longer saying "Dad" but saying "Sir" instead as a metaphor for the transition from boyhood to an adult male world of authority, discipline and respect. A Serious Haircut by Sean Barnet It would seem that the ‘Sir’ / ‘Ma’am’ thing as a way addressing family members is a matter of cultural differences. I also have never come across such a way of youngsters addressing family - it strikes me as unnaturally formal. ‘Sir’ would only be used when addressing school teachers or strangers in a formal context. Furthermore, with female school teachers the accepted form of address in the UK was ‘Miss’’ (not ‘Ma’am’) when I was at school in the 70s - not sure if this is still the case. by Dave111 on 29 Jul 2025
For all of those who find it weird to call your father "sir" I got my ass beat every time I failed to address any adult--including my parents--by "sir" or "ma'am". I love seeing more mods being written about, though, and fully acknowledging fetish in a relationship and the way one partner can lead the other to living out their fantasies. Also love the concept of the family being more comfortable with a bald and tatted up partner than the more conservative preppy look. A Serious Haircut by Sean Barnet Yes Yes Yes What a haircut I had short back and sides up to when I was 18, a friend of ours one's cut my hair in a regular square cut my parents said nothing only that it looked good a few months after my 18 birthday I asked my step dad if I could have a square cut instead of my usual short back and sides he said that was a girl haircut and called me Susy I was disgusted with him and the next time I went to the barber's i had my regular short back and sides then when I went to the Army to my surprise [or no surprise] what haircut did they give us all...short back and sides after being in the Army for a year I went back home I started to grow my hair long I had it cut and styled every 6 weeks and it was a nice long page-boy style my ears were covered and a bit over the collar at the back I loved my long hair and always looked how other men's long hair looked but I kept to my style after about 7 or 8 years I started cutting it shorter again experiment'ting with different shorter haircut even letting the back grow a little longer when it was in style had flat tops the sides cut to no1 no2 and had a few with my sides and back clipper shave and a bit off a comb over bumper comb over the front off my flat top, shaved my hair of razor it smooth had buzz'cut flat tops again I even had regular short haircut's no2 or3 or4 on the sides and back and the top a no6 or no8 and some times even a little longer but since 2017 I have my haircut in different fade's and in between yust regular short haircut's no2 sides and back and the top shorter cut with scissors and comb, i even had a nice mow-hawk for about 3 months and i shaved it short into no1 side's and back and the top a bit longer, i had my first fade and disided this is the haircut that i love, i love the very short one's and had experiment with quite a few,I had a few buzz'cut high and tight fade and south side fade but a nice high and tight razor fade with a short comb over is the fade for me I cut my top to 1.5cm that's my favorite by Skin fade on 27 Jul 2025
