New Flattop by Eric

It is Summer 2019 and I have let my hair grow out from a really nice high and tight. I have always kept my hair short and tight since my late twenties. My old barber used to say to me that I can rock any haircut that I want and that I should always be happy of that.

Long story short, I am without a barber in August 2019 (last barber left to go somewhere else) and I am searching online for barbers in Florida to visit. A new barber by the name of Jay (real name not used) is listed on Google as being the best of the best. His signature haircut to give is the flattop. To that end, a regular haircut is $14.00 and a flattop haircut is $20.00.

I called ahead to ensure that the shop was open and I pulled in the Floridian barber shop. The shop is a one-man shop run by Jay. He has been cutting hair in the shop for over 40 years.

I go inside the shop and Jay is just finishing with cutting hair for an older gentleman whose wife is waiting on him. As Jay is finishing up with the older gentleman, a firefighter with a pink polo shirt and grown out high and tight flattop named Charles comes into the shop for a haircut. I try to strike up a conversation with Charles (real name also not used) and asked him about Jay and if this is the place to go for a masculine and short haircut. Charles shared with me that he has been visiting Jay for years and that this is the place to get a short haircut.

It was finally my turn to get into the barber chair. Jay was a very nice man who likes to pass time with telling jokes.

After about 2 minutes of talking about fishing, he asked me what kind of haircut that I would like. Like word-vomit, I stated that I would like to try a flattop. I then asked him if I had the right head for it and he shared with me that I do have wavy hair but a short flattop would look great.

Jay started to work on my hair and soon the sides of my head were cut to a #1.5. Jay then began to cut the hair on the top of my head. Within 3 to 4 minutes my hair was looking flat and sharp.

Jay asked me what I thought about the sharp haircut that he had made as he was trimming my neck line. I shared with him that I was really looking to stay sharp and wanted to know what he thought about the sides of the cut being high and tight.

Jay took a moment to think this over and asked me if this is really the look that I wanted. He shared with me that many men with a military high and tight may not appear approachable because of the no-nonsense look and that folks like Charles waiting in the other room are in the fire and rescue and that a sharp haircut is for that profession.

I shared with Jay that I enjoy having my hair high and tight and that I would like to go high and tight. Jay said that once I do this, there is no turning back.

With this being said, he used a #0 blade on the clippers and I soon had a high and tight flattop. Jay shared with me that once he has a new client figured out, sometimes he is in for surprise with a request.

I could not help but admire the new haircut as I looks very sharp and masculine. I paid Jay and gave a tip. He shared with me that I will need frequent visits to get trimmed up.

I walked into the waiting area and showed Charles by haircut. Charles simply looked up and said that it looks nice. Jay then made the comment that this was the best flattop haircut of his to walk out of the shop today.

I drove home from the shop feeling like a new person and having a new barber.

Time will only tell how long I keep this hairstyle. I really hope that it turns out OK.
