Through the barber’s eyes: Jack by Barber Bruce

‘Right, who’s next?" I thought to myself. With Covid I’m working on appointment only so a quick check on the app let me see who my next client was.

My next customer was Jack. Jack was a lovely 15 year old boy who has had his haircut by me since he was just 3 years old. Jack always preferred a longer style but in the booking notes his mom requested a shorter, smarter look. This was Jack’s first visit after Covid so I was interested to see what his quarantine haircut would look like!

"Morning, mate" I heard the young man exclaim
"Oh, hey Jack. How are things?" I asked
"Yeah, not bad but my mom’s making get a haircut :( " replied Jack.
"Yeah I heard. Let’s discuss a new style then. A compromise between your shaggy hair and your mom’s requested short hair is what I think we should go for" I suggested.

Jack’s hair was really long and shaggy. He’d had his friend trim the sides with clippers during the lockdown but the top hadn’t been touched. I knew it would be really hard to get Jack to part with his beloved hair so had a hard job finding new hairstyles!

After much discussion, we finally decided on a fairly drastic change. We’d go for a nice skin fade on the sides whilst keeping a nice bit of thickness and length up top.

"Right mate, lets get cutting" I said

I seared Jack and simply began my tidying up the sides with a #4 grade. Once this was done I set in my bald line and began balding Jack out. The bald line was about an inch above Jack’s natural hairline. I then began the blending and fading process by using the #1 grade and clipper over comb. Once we had a sick fade on the sides,& was time to tackle the top.

The top was seriously long. When parted down the middle it covered his ear and looked like a medium length ladies cut! I started by removing a significant amount of length and drastically thinning out his hair. One this was done, I applied some product and job done! Jack had gone from shaggy surfer dude to having a sick looking fade. The new look really suited because despite only being 15, Jack looked much more mature (like 18 or 19) so the clean cut look was really nice.

Now did mom approve? The short answer... yes!! Happy mom, happy client!
