Back to School by Scott the Haircut Lover

Back to School

"Hey Cooper!"
"Jason! What’s up bro!"
Jason and I had been best friends since elementary school. He had been traveling with his family all summer and I hadn’t seen him in a long time.
"Wow bro! No haircut all summer?
"Nah just let it grow. I was afraid to get it don’t while we were traveling."
"Looks good though!"
"Thanks bro! Yours is kinda shaggy too!"
I giggled "I have no excuse though I was just lazy"
He ruffled my hair and we headed off to our first class. At lunch we sat where we always sit. Like usual a couple of friends came up to us and we all caught each other up on what we did over the summer. As lunch finished up Jason asked me if I had plans this weekend. I said nope! Just going to the football game Friday night. You want to come over after? I need to hear all about your trip! He said yes and after the game we ended up back at my house.
"Where is everyone?" Jason asked
He saw me get a little sad "Ummm my dad left us. Mom is a mess and usually just stays with her sister on the weekends. I think they just drink wine all night and cry about their husbands leaving them."
Jason hugged me. Saying he was so sorry and affirming he would always be there for me. "Why didn’t you tell me until now?"
"Its embarrassing bro!" We got quiet for a while. Put on a movie at some food and just chilled the rest of the night.
The next morning Cooper was up before me. When I woke I saw him in my bathroom fussing with his hair. I walked in and said "Cooper we really need to go see Sam!" He agreed. Sam was our barber. We had gotten our haircuts together many times since we were old enough to go alone. We never did anything too exciting with our hair, just the usual trims and keeping it neat. Cooper started to tell me about all the cool haircuts he saw when he was traveling. He showed me his phone of pictures of all these guys he had taken snap shots of mostly focused on their hair. Some were colored light blonde or grey/silver. One thing was for sure, ALL of them were really short! Shaved sides and back, lines carved into the haircut, styled tops, and even some perms! I asked why he had all of these pictures of random guys haircuts. He said he was ready for something new. He didn’t think Sam was the answer. I didn’t know what to say! We always went to Sam. Where do you want to go? He showed me a trendy barber shop that had opened over the summer. He said they do really cool haircuts. I was thinking in my head "what is all of this about? When did my best friend become so interested in hair?"
We called up and made appointments. They were that afternoon. I began to get nervous about this whole idea. Cooper showed me a picture of a really good looking guy, he was about our age, he had clearly bleached his hair light blonde, shaved the sides and had a couple of inches on top that was a little spiked with a shaved part. I felt really nervous about looking at all of these pictures of handsome guys. Cooper had clearly changed over the summer.
He asked "I think you could definitely pull off that look bro!"
I said "you think so? I don’t know that is a pretty big change! I have had dark brown hair all of my life."
Cooper showed me the cut he was getting. It was an extremely short cut. He called it a blurry fade. His brown hair was a bit lighter than mine, but this cut had been colored to a silvery color. It was shaved to the skin on the sides and then faded into the top with it shaved in the back but the middle of the back was a little longer. There was a line carved into this guys head about half way up the side and it arched all the way down to the back of the hairline. I said "wow that is some haircut". Copper smiled and said "This is going to be fun Jason! We are going to look really good!"
Not being sure what I exactly agreed to the time came to hop in his Jeep and head to the new barber shop. This place was nothing like Sam’s. It smelled funny, like ammonia, and there was loud music playing. The receptionist introduced us to our barbers, yes they were definitely barbers, but they definitely did more than just cut your hair. I sat in the chair. The cape was a lot more comfortable than the one Sam used. The barber was much more interested in me than Sam ever had been. He talked to me and I showed him the picture Cooper had sent to my phone. He smiled saying wow that is a big change. You will look amazing. One thing I was stuck on. I really liked how the back of the hair looked on the cut Cooper was going to get. It was unique and looked really cool. I showed that pic to my barber. He said "oh yeah that is very trendy! We can do that. But I think with your blue eyes the light blonde would be a better color for you" Once we had it all sorted out he started the process. Cutting my shaggy hair, shaping it, touching me a lot which was weirdly exciting me. Then he colored it. I hated the smell and I hated how long the process was. I wondered the whole time what Cooper was going to look like. My barber was so cool. The color was done and he washed my hair for what seemed like a long time. He toned it to a light blonde color. There was not yellow at all, it was perfect! Then he shaved the big arch line all the way down to the back of my hair line. He styled it up and spun me to the mirror. I didn’t recognize myself. I thanked him so much.
When I got to the lobby I didn’t see Cooper at all. I sat and waited and about 10 min later he came out with his hair looking exactly like the picture he had showed me. We smiled at each other. We looked so good!
We went and got some food. The whole conversation was about hair and the process. I couldn’t take my eyes off my best friend. To be honest he looked hot. I had never said that about a guy until this lunch. We decided we would go to the party at a friends house that night. When we got there everyone was shocked at our hair. Some people gave us a hard time but most people loved it.
We stumbled home after drinking too much. Of course my house was empty again. I was brushing my teeth and staring at my hair in the mirror. I really loved my new look. My best friend really looked hot. I didn’t know what was happening but there were a lot of things that were going to be different this school year…… To be continued
