So -- this older barber comes out of the back room. He asks if I want a flattop. I answer that I do, a little embarassed since my hair is only about 1/2 inch all over. He doesn`t seem to notice. He invites me over to his chair, so I, cape and all, move over. The daughter hovers to watch. He asks how short I like the back and sides. I tell him I usually get it to the skin. He smiles, clips on a different blade, then starts in. He then removes ALL the hair on the sides and back. He then starts in at the top, explaining that since it`s so short already, he can`t create the PERFECT flattop, but he`ll do the best he can. It`s looking pretty great, but a little high on top. I ask him to take it lower. He says (my favorite part!): `OH! You want a trooper flattop! Why didn`t you say so?` He then starts in with a different blade on top, leaving only the barest horseshoe (about 1/4`) in front. The top is shaved down to the skin. He then goes back and gets the edger clippers, and begins re-tracing the sides and back...down to skin. When he turns me around in the chair and shows me the back, my skin is gleaming. Not a hint of hair. Took me about 4 weeks to grow out that haircut. But REAL nice.
