GROWING UP - PART 3

I was up early on Sunday morning, went downstairs for breakfast and dad was sitting reading the paper drinking his coffee. I grabbed the cereal box, milk and bowl and sat down. Normally dad didn’t speak, as he liked this time to read the paper in peace. However, today he folded the paper and started to chat about different things ending on our discussion the previous night regarding my moving school at the end of term. He said that as long as my grades remained good, he would have no problems. I promised that I would work extra hard as I really wanted to attend the local school. We carried on talking for a while when a knock on the kitchen door interrupted our chat. Dad opened the door and there was Steve. He wanted to know if dad had forgotten that he was going to cut his hair. When we looked at the clock, it was past 0830 hours. Dad said to Steve to come in and have a drink. It was then that Steve said that Pete was also waiting and if dad didn’t mind, a couple of friends were also requiring a haircut, but if dad was too busy, Steve would cut it later at his house. Dad just laughed and said that it would be OK. In fact, dad suggested that Steve cut their hair under his supervision. I walked over to dad, who surprised me by putting his arm around my shoulder and we followed Steve to the garage. Steve introduced dad to his friends and after shaking their hands, he opened the door and we all walked in. The new lads were really impressed with dad’s set-up, which seemed to please him. They said that they were really grateful to dad for allowing them to stay. Pete was the first to jump in the chair and Steve, Mark, Simon, John and I sat down. As dad placed the cape over Pete, he was asking the lads which school they were at. They all said the local high school and that it was great news to hear that I would be joining them next term. Dad asked Pete how he wanted him to cut his hair. Pete said that he and Steve had been on the Internet and found some great sites showing different hairstyles. He held out a picture and asked dad if he could cut it like that. Dad looked at the photo and said that he did not have enough hair for a flattop but if he let it grow out on the top for a couple of weeks, he would be able to do it and that it would look great on him. Dad said that all he would do today would be to trim the sides and back and leave the top to grow. Pete seemed a little disappointed, which dad noticed and said that he could shave the back and sides and blend it into the top, but he wanted to leave the top alone. Pete agreed and dad picked up the clippers, put on an attachment and started to remove the hair around the back of the head and sides. He brushed off the loose hair, took some lather and placed it around the neck and sides of Pete’s head. With the razor, he removed the lather and wiped the area clean. He then picked up the clippers and started to blend in the remaining hair to the shaved area. When he was finished, Pete said that it looked great and the rest of the lads said that he looked really cool.

Steve was next up. He sat in the chair and said to dad that he wanted it all shaved off. Dad said that it was a bit extreme and wouldn’t he get into trouble at school. Dad suggested that he have a #00000 on the top again and he would shave the sides. Steve reluctantly agreed, but dad said he would ‘make him shine’ at the end of term which seemed to bring the smile back to Steve’s face. Dad picked up the clippers, and carefully cropped Steve’s hair. He went over the top a few times just to make sure that he caught all of the hair. Next the lather was placed around the head and as dad started the shave, the result resembled a haircut we had carried out just a few days ago. Pete and I looked at each other and smiled. Steve seemed pleased with the result when dad had finished and took a close inspection in the mirror when dad removed the cape. Dad suggested that I should go next. I walked over to the chair and dad said to Steve, he is all yours. I looked at dad in amazement and was about to say something when Steve took hold of the cape, wrapped it around and said that this was going to be a pleasure. Steve asked dad what he should do and he said that he should ask me. Amazement, I was to get a choice! Mind you, some choice, I only had stubble growing out of the back and sides of my head and a bit of fuzz on the top. Steve looked at me and said to leave the style up to him. I had nothing to lose so agreed. Steve took the clippers and carefully started at the front of my ear and clipped of a little of the stubble. He worked his way around my head, changed the blade on the clippers and started to blend in the remaining hair. Dad offered some advice as he was cutting, but seemed to be impressed at how Steve was cutting my hair. It was not long before he was brushing the loose hair away, and placed some lather around the edge of the haircut. He was looking for the Mach3 when dad said that he would show him how to use the straight razor. Dad told me to hold still. He placed the blade in Steve’s hand and started to guide him around the side of the head. Dad allowed him to finish off the neck and the other side of my head. No blood, so he must have done it OK. Dad said that it was a good job and he approved of the haircut.

When I left the chair, the other three looked at each other and it was Mark who replaced me in the chair. Steve placed the cape over him and combed out his hair. Mark’s hair was a dark brown thatch, hanging over his ears and resting on his collar. Dad asked how he wanted his hair cut. Mark replied that it had been some time since he had short hair so was uncertain what he wanted. Pete then pulled out his pictures and said that he should have a flattop. Mark looked at the photo, said that he thought that it was cool and could his hair look like that? Dad said that it should be no problem but it would take a while to get it looking like the picture. Mark said that they were not doing anything so go ahead. Dad spoke to Steve and said that he thought that he should start with a #2 on the back and sides, and showed him where to stop clipping the hair. Steve picked up the clippers, selected the attachment, switched on and started to remove part of the thatch in front of him. Steve was careful in what he was doing; making sure that the clippers took off all the hair and went over areas a couple of times to make sure it was cut evenly. When he finished, dad said that he needed to spray the hair with water, then rub some gel into the hair and blow it into shape. Steve sprayed the hair, working it in with a comb. Dad handed over a tub of gel and Steve placed a dollop in his hand, rubbed them together then started to massage Marks hair. Dad took out the dryer and a brush and showed Steve how to style the hair so that it started to stand up straight on the top of his head. When he finished, dad took the clippers, placed a different blade on them, took up a large comb and started to shorten the hair on the top. All the while he was talking to Steve telling him to make sure that the comb stayed level and that the persons head was square to the shoulders otherwise you would end up with a slanting flattop. Dad had quickly taken the mop of hair down into what was starting to look like a real flattop. It was then that dad asked how short Mark wanted to go on the top. He said that he would leave it up to dad. Now a few days ago I would have said that was a big mistake leaving it up to dad. However, he slowly clipped the top taking it down slowly until it was about ¾". He said that he would not take it too short this time until Mark got used to the style. He then explained that it could be taken a lot shorter, the sides could be left and the middle shortened to produce a landing strip or shaved completely and the sides shortened to form a horseshoe flattop. Pete was all for going the whole way, but dad said that it would be better to leave it this time. Steve then lathered up the sides and back and slowly shaved of the hair to just above the ears. Surplus lather was removed and a towel and brush removed the loose hairs still attached to Marks head. Mark then looked in the mirror and a huge grim beamed from his face. Awesome was all he could say. Dad told him how he needed to maintain the hair on top so that it stayed upright. Mark just kept looking at himself in the mirror.

Next up was Simon. Steve had already decided how he should have his blond hair cut. He said that he should have the sides and back cut close to the skull but not shaved possibly with the #000 attachment. The hair on the top would then be cut to ½" and blended in, but at the front, the hair should be left to about 1" to form a sort of fringe. He said that he had seen a photo on the Internet and wanted to create that look for Simon. We were all quiet and just looked at Steve. Dad said that he thought Steve should go ahead and let’s see what it turned out like. Simon nodded and said ‘let’s go for it!’ Steve picked up the clippers, added the attachment, switched them on and started at the nape of the neck, slowly moving the clippers up towards the crown. He repeated the cut around the rest of the head, brushed off the loose hair, changed the attachment and moved in front of the chair. He was about to start cutting when he asked dad how much he should leave at the front. Dad said to check the length of the hair and judge from there. Steve moved in about two inches from the front, lifted the hair with a comb and started to run the clippers slowly over the skull. Simon must have been enjoying the sensation of the clippers buzzing over the top of his skull as he had a big smile on his face. He was not the only one smiling, looking around, it seemed that everyone was enjoying the experience, including dad. When Steve had finished, dad suggested that he should use the thinning scissors on the front to create a feathery effect if that was what he was after. Dad showed him how to use the scissors, handed them to him to finish off his haircut. Steve then picked up the clippers again and made sure that the hair on the sides and top blended in. He then placed some lather around the sides and nape of the neck, picked up the razor and completed the edging of the haircut. When he finished wiping the sides and neck, he combed out the hair and turned Simon around so that he could see the finished product. Everyone agreed that it was a good haircut and really suited him.

The last one up was John. He had thick black hair similar to the twins. He sat in the chair and whilst Steve was placing the cape on him, he announced that he wanted a really short cut but with about ¾" of hair left on the front so he could gel it up into spikes. Steve asked how short he wanted his hair and did he want the sides shorter than the top? Dad tried to explain that he could have the sides and back starting from a total shave and work with different lengths up to the front of his head, have the sides and back completely shaved and the top cut short blending into his longer hair at the front or cut fairly short all over leaving the front longer so he could gel it up. John finally said that he wanted the sides and back really short with the top a little longer with his spikes at the front. Dad suggested to Steve that he start cutting with a #2 on the sides and back to give a ¼" cut, graduating to a ½" on top, leaving the front till later and seeing how it looked. Steve picked up the clippers, placed on the attachment and slowly started to remove the hair on the side and back of John’s head. He went over it a few times just to make sure that he had removed all the loose hair. He then changed attachments and started to take the top down. When he finished, it looked really cool. All that was left was to trim the front, gel it up and finish off the back and sides with the razor. Steve took about another 10 minutes to finish off and we were all done.

We all gathered together in front of the mirror and had huge grins on our faces. Pete said that he had his camera in his jacket and asked dad if he would mind taking a photo. We all gathered around the chair, with Steve taking centre position sitting in the chair. I was just thinking that this was a Sunday I would not forget in a hurry. Pete said that he had to be going. Mark, Simon and John again thanked dad for allowing them to come and have their haircut. Dad said that it was no problem and that it was Steve they should be thanking. The four of them got up to leave but Steve remained sitting in the chair. He said that he would catch up with them later on. When they had gone, dad turned to Steve and asked if he felt like giving one more haircut? Steve smiled and said he hoped that he would have a chance to talk to my dad. As Steve got out of the chair and was replaced by dad, I took up a seat against the wall. Steve took the cape and placed it around dad. When Steve asked how dad wanted it, he said a high and tight. Steve looked at him and said what was that? Dad explained that it was the name of a haircut the US Armed Forces people had. Starting with the back and sides cut to stubble just using the clippers with the #00000 blade then the top taken to about ¼". He then said that he would like the sides and back shaved clean. Steve said that was the same haircut he had given us a few days ago. Yes, and now you know the correct name of the haircut. Steve picked up the clippers put on the blade and switched on. He slowly removed the small amount of hair that had grown since dad’s last clipping, taking great care to cover all the area. He then changed the attachment and removed the hair on top of dad’s head. When Steve had finished brushing off the loose hairs, he applied the lather, picked up the straight razor and proceeded to shave the neck and sides of dad’s head. He repeated the process again, this time going against the hair growth. While he was wiping off the remaining lather, he said to dad that he had made up his mind what he was going to do when he left school. He was going to become a full time barber. I guess that dad had already fathomed that out as he just nodded and said that it was a good choice, after all everyone needed to get a haircut.
