Money by jajko
My name is Adam, I was born in 1961. I lived with my father and mother. I had no brother. Parents respected that long hair was fashionable for boys in this period. I was glad that my parents are not conservative and agree with my hairstyle. Always before a haircut in a modern barber shop, my hair covered my shirt collar, covered my ears, and my bangs touched the tip of my nose. My parents sent me to a modern barbershop usually 6-7 weeks after my last haircut. I often went there on Fridays after school or on Saturday mornings. My father gave me money to pay for my haircut and some money for Coke at the most.
I was over 12 years old and wanted to buy a new light for my bike. When my father gave me money for a barber, I also asked him for money for a light. He refused to give me that much money and told me to save the money for a new light.
At school, one of the boys said that at the other end of town there is a Mr. Smith's barbershop, which is very cheap.
I had a new plan. It was Friday, after school I bought a light, mounted it on my bike and went to the opposite end of town to find Mr. Smith's barbershop.
I was disappointed to see the little old house labeled Mr. Smith's Men's Barber Shop. I leaned my bike against the wall of the barber shop and went inside. I showed the money and asked Mr. Smith if I had enough money for my haircut. He replied yes, sit on the waiting chair.
A boy about my age sat in the barber's chair, the barber wrapped him in a white sheet. The boy had less than 1 inch of hair on the top of his head and about 3/8 inch on the back of his head before being cut.
A younger boy, about 9 years old, who had already had his haircut, was sitting on the waiting chair. He had a short unfashionable haircut. I felt sorry for the boy, because I assumed that he would be laughed at by boys who wear long hair. Later I found out that the younger boy's name is Edward and the older boy's name is Michael.
I began to look around the barber shop, which smelled like a mixture of cigarette smoke and cologne. The waiting chairs were old and wooden. It was completely different from what I was used to in a modern barbershop. I started thinking about what I would tell the barber, how he should cut my hair. They know me in the fashion salon, so they just ask if I want a classic hairstyle. But I've never been to Mr. Smith's barber shop, so I don't know what to tell him.
I was interrupted from my thoughts when the father of the boys called out to the younger boy: Edeard, let's go. Both boys had the same short haircuts. Poor boys. Also, I don't have such strict parents.
The barber swept the boys' hair and called to me: Come and sit here! And he pointed to the vacant barber's chair. When Mr. Smith wrapped me in a sheet, he asked if I needed a classic boy's haircut. Yes, sir. I was glad that the barber would give me the classic haircut I was used to.
The barber started combing his hair, took the electric clipper from the hook, oil dripped onto the gears. I didn't know what to do, because in my salon they only cut me with ordinary scissors. The barber was already pushing my head forward. He placed a clipper under the hair on my neck. When he turned it on, I felt like my whole body was shaking. The barber began to cut the hair from the neck towards the top of the head. The first hair about 5 inches long fell on the sheet. I was in a panic, my throat tightened. The barber was still cutting the hair from the neck to the nape of the neck. He gradually moved to the right side and I saw my ear in the mirror. There was only a 1/4 inch stubble on the right side of the head. Then he took the scissors and cut the hair on the top of my head Finally he combed about 1/2 inch long hair on the top of my head and straightened the bangs high about 2 inches above the eyebrows. The barber took the clipper and changed to a finer gear. He bent my head forward again and cut me from my neck to the nape of my neck. Finally he made about 1 and 1/2 inch white arcs around the ears. He used scissors to transition from 1/4 inch stubble to 1/2 inch long hair on top of the head. The barber wet the back of my head and both sides of my head and applied a white cream which he gradually scraped off. When he was done, he wiped off the rest of the foam and put cologne on my head. He combed his hair again. Before he released me from the seat, he stood behind me with a smaller mirror and showed me the back of my head. I had 5 inches of my head shaved from my shirt collar. I realized that it was the same hairstyle that Michael and Edward had. I paid Mr. Smith and thanked him for the haircut. I got on my bike and rode home as fast as I could.

My parents were surprised by my new hairstyle, so I told the whole story about how much I wanted a new bike light. I learned about Mr. Smith's Low Cost Barber Shop. My parents started praising me for how my short hair suits me and that I have small ears, that I don't have to hide them under my hair.
