A women’s perspective by Anna Zelle

I’ve been lurking here for a while and finally decided to jump in. I’ve seen so many of you talk about your haircuts or your love for short styles, and I thought maybe you’d like to hear a woman’s perspective for a change. So here it goes: We notice. And some of us love it. I know I do.

Just to be clear, I’ve always had long hair and wouldn’t want it any other way. I love the way it feels, and it’s part of who I am. But on men? Nothing beats a classic short haircut. Crew cuts, flattops, buzz cuts—those clean lines and sharp edges just do something for me.

I think it started when I was a kid. My dad had this perfectly tapered nape, always so neat. Then, when he started losing his hair, he decided to shave it all. Still kept it neat, but I’ll always remember the way that sharp taper looked. My brothers had longer hair back then, like most guys. But one summer, Dad took them both to the barber, and they came back with buzz cuts. I still remember how different they looked—fresh, confident, like new versions of themselves.

My youngest brother stuck with it. He liked the no-fuss style. My older brother let his grow out a bit but then decided to try a flattop. Even back then, I was fascinated. Something about those clean, crisp edges stuck with me.

Fast forward to high school, and while all my friends were swooning over guys with long, shaggy hair (it was the trend), I couldn’t help but notice the ones who kept it short. There was one guy who had this short buzz cut. Quiet, kind of shy, but that haircut… I’d sit behind him in class, just staring at the back of his head. Yeah, I know it sounds weird, but I couldn’t help it.

Then in college, I dated a guy with a flattop, and that’s when it all clicked. The first time I ran my fingers over his head? Game over. The bristles on the sides, the flat top… it felt intimate in a way I didn’t expect. It became our thing. Whenever we were watching a movie or just hanging out, I’d end up running my hands over his hair. There’s something so sensual about it.

But it’s not just about how it feels. It’s what those haircuts say about a guy. Short styles like that take effort. You’ve got to keep up with regular barber visits, make sure it’s always sharp. It shows attention to detail, discipline. And there’s this quiet confidence about it. It’s classic. No frills, just solid.

When I met my husband, he had longer hair—not too long, but definitely not short. I mentioned my love for crew cuts pretty early on, and one day, he surprised me. He walked in with the sharpest crew cut I’d ever seen. I couldn’t stop staring. I might’ve convinced him to keep it that way, and now, years later, it’s his signature look. Every time he comes back from the barber, I still get that same thrill.

Now, as a mom, I’ve definitely encouraged my boys to go for short hair too. It’s classic, easy to take care of, and there’s just something about that fresh-from-the-barber confidence. My youngest took to it right away and loves how it feels. My older one tried growing it out a bit, but after his first buzz cut, he was hooked.

I know some guys think women only like longer styles or whatever’s trendy, but trust me, there are plenty of us who love the classic short look. A fresh buzz cut, a sharp flattop—it stands out. It’s like a guy who knows who he is and doesn’t need to follow trends.

So, to all the guys here keeping those cuts sharp—just know there are women out here who love it. We notice. We appreciate the effort. It’s not just a haircut; it’s a statement. And yeah, it’s sexy.

Thanks for letting me share. Thought you might like hearing it from the other side of the mirror.
