It was a bright sunny Monday morning as I walked to my Barbers’ shop in the local village. This was the last week before the local schools closed for two weeks. It would either mean that this week would be busy, if families were going away, or the last week with everyone getting haircuts before school started.
A short cut to the shop, was through some overgrown waste land, but there was a well-trodden footpath to guide you through. About half way across, I saw a number of kids. It was only as I approached, that I realised that four lads were holding another lad down. I recognised a couple of the lads as customers of my shop. Getting closer, I saw one lad pull out a pair of scissors, he grabbed hold of some hair on the top of the one being pinned downs head, and cut it off.
I shouted at the group and as soon as they recognised me, they turned tail and ran off. I approached the lad still lying on the floor and realised that it was Billy, a lad who comes to my shop with his father. Tears were streaming down his face. I asked him what it was all about, and in between his sobs, he explained that the four lads were the school bullies and their latest craze was to get lads to have short haircuts and if they didn’t comply, then they would cut it for them. Fortunately, they had only just started on him when I arrived.
Helping Billy to his feet, I saw that a portion of his fringe had been removed nearly up to his scalp. Billy always had a fringe touching his eyebrows with hair just covering his ears and collar. I explained to him what I saw and told him he would have to grin and bear the remarks he was going to get when he arrived at school. If he wanted to come and see me during his lunch break, I would sort his hair out. Wiping the tears from his face, he said that he would see me at lunch time and started to walk off in the direction of the school.
Arriving at the shop, I kept thinking of Billy. How was I going to rectify his hair dilemma. The trade was good for a Monday morning and I had been kept quite busy. Not realising the time, the door opened and in walked Billy. I finished cutting the current client’s hair and once he left the shop, I invited Billy into the chair.
After taping and caping Billy, I ran the comb through his hair to assess the full extent of the damage. I explained to him that his options were very limited. I could cut the remaining fringe off but that would look a bit silly with the remaining length of hair on his head. Another option was to cut all the hair on his head to the length of hair that had been cut off. I could taper the hair down on the back and sides to give a more modern cut, but the decision was his.
Billy looked at me in the mirror and said to cut it so it would match the front and he liked the idea of having the back and sides tapered down. It would be just like his fathers.
Picking up the clippers, I told Billy I would start with a number 4 guard and see how that looked. Pushing the clippers through the hair on the top of his head resulted in a cascade of hair falling onto the cape. Pass after pass, the hair on the top of his head was removed. On closer examination, I informed Billy that you could still see a bit of a difference, but, if he wanted to leave the hair at that length, I could blend the front hair so it was the same length and spike it up. Billy said he would go with that suggestion. Once I had completed the front, I asked Billy how short he wanted to go on the back and sides. He seemed a little unsure, so I explained that he could leave it at the same length as the top or, he could have it go three, two, one, or, he could have a number one all the way to the crown and blended in to the top. The final option would be a number one all the way to the crown and then the back and sides skinned or even foiled. After starring at himself in the mirror, he asked if I could do the number one with foiled back and sides.
A smile spread across my face and I asked him if he was sure, as what he had asked for, would be a big change. He said to go ahead and it would be a big surprise for his father. I had not even thought about his parents. The last thing I wanted was for an irate father coming to my shop.
Picking up the clippers again, I attached the number one guard and started to remove the hair around the back and sides. A quick dusting and I asked if he wanted to stop there, but he said to carry on. Picking up the edgers, I ran them from his nape to just below the previous cut. Once the back was cleared, the sides soon followed. A quick brush down, foil shaver in hand, I slowly removed the remaining hair to just below the edger line. A quick blend of the remaining hair and it was finished.
Showing Billy, the finished cut in the hand mirror, he said that he really liked the haircut and thanked me for helping him out. He asked if he could come back later that afternoon as he would have to get the money off his father for the haircut. I told him not to bother, as the haircut was on the house.
Billy left the shop and I continued with customers for the rest of the afternoon. I was busy clearing up and just about to close the shop when I saw Billy’s father approaching the shop. I prepared myself for the worst. The man entered the shop. He walked towards me, put out his hand, and said thank you. Billy has explained what happened and I am really grateful to you. I would like to pay for Billy’s haircut but I said that it was on the house. I asked him how much Billy had told him. I said that I recognised a couple of the lads and knew their fathers. The man said that he also knew the fathers and wanted to know if I would assist him in carrying out a plan. I said as long as it doesn’t break the law, count me in. He looked at me and said, I take it you don’t know, I am actually a police officer. I just smiled and said no. He then introduced himself as Steven.
Steven outlined his plan and said he would speak to the boys’ fathers to see if they were on board with the idea. He would let me know.
Tuesday afternoon, Steven entered the shop. He said that it was a green light from the fathers. They were actually horrified that their sons were involved in something like this. The leader of the group would be first. His father was informing him tonight, that the police had been involved regarding their latest escapade. It looked as though they would be arrested and appear at the local court. He would tell his son that he needed to make a good impression in court, so he should get a haircut.
Later that afternoon, in walked the boy. He was a bit sheepish when he climbed into my barber’s chair. I taped and caped him and as I ran a comb through his hair, I asked him what he wanted. He replied that he wanted a good trim. Playing along with him, I picked up my scissors, placed them at the top of his fringe and cut a large piece out at the top of his brow. His face was priceless. As I dusted him off and removed the cape, I said that the cut was on the house. Initially he did not move from the chair. He turned his head and said what have you done? Are you not going to cut my hair? I said that I thought that was the style he wanted. Afterall, that was the cut he had given Billy. Folding up the cape, I said if you want it finished, you had better bring the other boys in here for haircuts tomorrow after school. As he climbed out of the chair, he just kept looking at himself in the mirror and said that he would be laughed at when he turned up to school the next day.
I phoned Steven and informed him that the first one had been in and hopefully the others should be arriving tomorrow after school. He said great, I’ll be there with Billy.
Wednesday passed slowly. I couldn’t wait for the school to finish. I was just finishing up a client when the four of them walked into the shop. I told them to have a seat as I still had one person ahead of them. It didn’t take me long to finish the clients short back and sides. Whilst brushing him down, the door opened and in walked Billy, escorted by a man in a police uniform. I could see the panic on their faces. As I showed the client out of the shop, I locked the door.
The policeman asked Billy if these were the people who had attacked him. Billy confirmed that they were. The policeman informed them that a possible four charges could be brought against them, but it was up to Billy to decide if the case proceeded. The four of them looked pleadingly at Billy and said that it was just a joke, they didn’t mean any harm. Billy stood there giving the impression that he was thinking over things. He turned to me and asked if I could give his four friends a haircut. I said that it would not be a problem. Billy then informed me that he would be deciding on the haircut for each of the boys. The policeman asked the lads if they agreed to that. The four of them just sat there nodding their heads.
Billy told the first one to get in the chair. The lad was not a regular to my shop but as I ran the comb through his fair longish locks, you could tell he took good care of his hair. Billy approached the chair and announced that this one was going to receive the same haircut as him.
Picking up the clippers and attaching the four guard, I ran the clippers through the top of his head. Hair cascaded onto the cape and after a few more passes, the hair on top of his head was done. Switching the guard to number one, I started at the back and ran them all the way to the crown. The hair on the sides soon followed. Dusting the loose hair from his head, I picked up the edgers and proceeded to run them to just below the last cut. The foils followed plus a little blending of the top into the sides and the first one was complete.
The second one into the chair was also not known to me. After taping and caping him and running the comb through his collar length dark hair, Billy announced that this one was going to be a number two all over. Clippers in hand with the two-guard attached, I nudged the lads head down, placed the clippers against his skin and let them slowly make their way to the crown. Hair was raining down but it was not until I made the first pass up the side of his head, did I see a panic look in his eyes. The other side soon followed and then it was onto the top. Lifting the hair with my comb, the clippers were placed at his forehead and slowly made their way to the crown. Pass after pass soon had the hair removed. A quick finish with the edgers and the second haircut was over.
The third one in the chair, was a regular to my shop. His fair hair was covering his ears and the back hair rested on his collar. It was normally just a slight trim, but I imagined that Billy had other plans for today. Taped and caped, Billy announced that this one was going to be a two on top but with the back and sides foiled and taken quite high. Once again, the clippers greatly reduced the hair on the top of the head. With his fair hair, it looked a lot shorter. Replacing the guard with a number one, the hair on the back and sides was reduced all the way to the crown. The edgers took the hair down a stage further and the ultimate was running the foils around his head.
The final person in the chair was looking a little worried. Once I had taped and caped him, I ran the comb through his hair. Billy was standing at the side and said that it looked like his first haircut he had received on Monday. The lad apologised and said that he had been made fun of at school all day. I didn’t think that cut any ice with Billy, as he said, this haircut would be a number one on the top with the back and sides foiled and not blended in. He looked at me and said that he had seen a picture of a man in the military with a recon haircut. He wanted the same look as that. I just nodded.
Picking up the clippers for the fourth time, I attached a number one guard, placed them at the front of his head and ran them all the way to the back. A few more passes and with a mound of hair on the cape, I removed the guard and stripped all the hair around the back and sides of the lad’s head. The edgers reduced the hair even further and the foils ensured a really smooth finish. Dusted down, the cap removed, the lad made his way back to join the others.
The policeman, who had just been standing there watching the whole procedure, turned to Billy and asked if he wanted to press charges. Again, Billy the actor, stood there, straight faced, and said that he thought they had learned their lesson. Afterall, there was still two days left at school and I’m sure everyone will be ribbing them over their haircuts. The police officer turned to the door, opened it, and told the lads they were free to go, but to remember that all of this would be logged at the local police station.
Once they had left the shop, Steven turned to Billy and said that he was really proud of him. Turning to me he thanked me and asked if there was still time for one more haircut. I said that I was a little confused as there had only been the four lads who had attacked Billy. He just smiled and said that it was for him. Afterall, there was no way he was not going to get a haircut like his son if it made him look as handsome as him.
