Shorter for Spring by Carson

This story is completely true. For context, my hair is brown, about an inch on the sides, taken a little tighter by the sideburns, and maybe 4 inches on top. The sides are blended into the top, and I typically wear it forward, with no product, kind of fluffy in the front.

It had been about five weeks since my last haircut. I could have pushed it out maybe two more weeks, but the back was starting to feel bulky, so I was due. I go to a salon, but the same guy always cuts my hair. I arrived at the shop, he washed my hair, and then took me back to the chair, facing the mirror.

He asked what I wanted to do, and I briefly explained. "Kind of what I have now, just shorter." I’ve been going to him for a while, so he kind of just knows what to do. My hair grows moderately fast like I said, but it had only been a little longer than a month, so there wasn’t a ton to take off, or so I thought.

The cut started as normal, just catching up and making conversation. I don’t really think twice when I’m in the chair because it turns out the same every time. He started with the sides, then moved his way to the top, as usual. I watched as he went over the top for the first time, and noticed he took more than a months worth of length off, maybe about 3/4 of an inch. As the cut continued, I noticed that he kept coming back to the top. He took another 1/4-1/2 of an inch off two more times. With the top now being considerably shorter, he had to bring the sides in just a little bit tighter to match, which I didn’t mind. He then moved to the back, continuing the cut. He was scissoring back there for a few minutes, it felt longer than usual. I felt a mix of nerves and thrill as I realized I might be receiving a haircut considerably shorter than I asked for. I had been wanting to go shorter for some time, but what if it was too short? I still wanted my hair to have some fluff in the front. By this point, about 20 minutes in, he was done cutting, and pulled out the trimmers to finish the cut. He trimmed my sideburns, around the ears, and cleaned up the back, making sure to get rid of any stray hairs. To put the finishing touches on the cut, he styled my hair somewhat forward, and snipped off another 1/4 inch from the front. In my head I thought, "Shorter again?". He brushed me off and said "All good?" I replied with enthusiasm, running my fingers through my hair, "I think this is the shortest I’ve been in a while, but I like it!" He answered back, "Did I go too short?" I told him it wasn't too short at all, as I had been thinking of pushing it shorter for a while. I’ll probably be back this time next month to get cleaned up before I start my new job.
