" John can you pick my dress and your suit from the dry cleaners tomorrow ? said Maureen
" suit ? dress? sure hun . But what’s the occasion ? " John replied
" erm your nieces 21st !remember ?" said Maureen
" Friday night in Woolton labour club ? remember now ? Tracy your sisters kid ? Remember ?"

I ve got a hairdressers appointment and I won’t be able to pick your suit up my dress get Tracy a present and get my hair done !"
" you could at least help me out " she said
" what time does the dry cleaners close ?" he said " I’m working in Manchester I’m not sure what time I’ll be home "
It closes at 5 " she said "and talking of hair don’t you think you could do with a trim ?"
"I haven’t got time by the time I get home from Manchester and go the dry cleaners I won’t have the time babe " John reminder her
John was out before Maureen in the morning long day ahead in work
10 o’clock johns phone beeped it was from Maureen "DONT FORGET DRYCLEANERS "
John replied "OK "
Johns phone beeped again "BARBERS IN MANCHESTER ?"
John replied "MAYBE "
Yet another text "XXXX"
John carried on working after a few hours he checked his watch
1oclock I’ll go get some dinner
Going for a walk he found a Greggs bought his lunch
Sitting outside he noticed a barbers CLAIRES CUTS
Looking at his watch he thought 1.15 I’ve got 20minutes left before I’m due back in work
He walked over the shop looked empty a blonde woman sat reading a book in one of the barbers chairs
John went in " Any chance of a haircut ? " he said
"Sure up you get sit here " said Claire
"What we doing ? " Claire asked
"Short ? Shaved ?Flattop may be ?
"Just a trim thnx "
"Oh ok " Claire was disappointed johns hair reached to shoulders
"Just the ends if you don’t mind " Claire obliged still disappointed
"All finished " she said showing John the back
John nodded said thanx paid and left
John went to back work
" well that wasn’t too bad " he thought

John replied BEEN BARBERS

10 minutes later he was finished on his way home looking at his hair in his rear view mirror
John thought " looks good the wife will be pleased pick up the dry cleaning "
"might even get lucky tonight "
John picked up the drycleaning and headed home
Maureen checked her watch
It was 4.45 she was still under the dryer still got another 30 mins in the hairdresser for Shiela to do her comb out

John drove down to Shiela’s hairdressers in Vauxhall st
Shiela’s was an old fashioned hairdressers not some fancy salon Maureen’s mum had been going for years and naturally took Maureen there
Maureen was pretty old fashioned and had her hair set by Shiela once a fortnight or on special occasions
Maureen had treated herself and had her hair permed then a shampoo set her mother was going to the party so they were both in Shiela’s getting pampered
Maureen’s mum had asked her about johns hair " your John needs a good haircut " she said " I’ve never seen him with short hair " she said
Maureen told her mum "johns been the barbers he told me so you might get a chance to see him looking smart tonight "
"Infact he’ll be here in a few mins we can give you a lift home "Maureen said
John parked outside Shiela’s and went in
Maureen noticed john straight away
She was fuming
" what happened ? You said you’d had a haircut ?im not going any where with you looking like that "
Her mum joined in " it’s your nieces birthday and you’re going to turn up like a hobo ?
Before John could say a word " Shiela can you sort this hobos hair out ? "
" he looks like a girl " said Maureen’s mum
" I’m afraid I don’t do men’s hair "
"Perms ,sets and cuts I’m just an old fashioned hairdresser I’m sorry " said Sheila
"What about George’s around the corner I’m sure he could sort his hair out " he’s open until 6 I think ?"
Quick Maureen get your coat cmon " and you pay for my daughters haircut and meet us outside "she said to John
After paying for the hair do John stepped outside the shop
Cmon her mother said I used to take your brothers there when they were kids remember Maureen ?

Maureen remembered sitting in George’s barbershop watching her brothers getting their summer crew cuts poor Scott and Dave getting cropped by old George god he must be nearly 70 now she thought

John had never seen his MIL like this just did as he was told

John sat in the chair nervously awaiting his fate

Poor John looked in the mirror not realising the severe haircut he was about to receive

To say he was shocked was an understatement however both his wife and MIL were beaming

No2 was swapped and the top was shorn
John sat there bewildered he looked like a marine
Maureen and Vera were astonished they’d never seen John so smart

Smiling Georgia took off the cape and helped him out the chair
